About the Recipe

Double tadka dal and Jeera Rice is very famous in north India. It is a comfort food which prepared at-lest once a week in most of household. Toor dal is also known as good for digestion.  

Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal, 1/4 cup channa dal
  • 3 tomatoes, 1 inch ginger, 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds, 3/4 tsp turmeric, 1/2 tsp red chili powder, 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 whole red chili and pinch of hing
  • 2 & 1/2 cup water, 2 tbsp oil and 2 tsp ghee for tadka
  • 1 cup rice
  • 2 tsp oil, cumin seeds, 4 cloves, 1 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cup water

Stepwise Directions

Step 1- Rinse dals and rice separately and soaked for 30 minutes. Chop ginger, garlic and tomatoes.

Step 2 – for dal, take pressure cooker and add 2 tbsp oil. When oil is hot, add 1 tsp cumin and then chopped ginger and garlic. Cook for 2-3 minutes and add tomatoes. After cooking tomatoes for 1 minute, add 3/4 tsp turmeric, 1/2 tsp red chili powder and 3/4 salt (or salt to taste). Then cook for a minute and add soaked toor and channa dal. Add 2 & 1/2 cup water and close the lid, cook for 3 whistles on medium heat.

Step 3 – When steam of pressure is out, open it and check if dal is soft. Then start gas again on medium heat and boil for few minutes. Taste seasoning and add at this stage. The more you cook open the more taste of dal will develop. Then in end add 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice and close after string it. 

Step 4 –  for Tadka, take a pan and add 2 tsp ghee. When ghee is hot, add 2 whole red chili and pinch of hing. Then add chopped onion and cook until brown. Then add 1/2 tsp red chili powder ( adding red chili powder at this stage, gives a good color and aroma in Dal). Then add this hot tadka in hot Dal. Dal is ready.

Step 5 – For Jeera Rice, take a pressure cooker and add 2 tsp oil. When oil is hot, add 4 cloves, 1 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick and 1 tsp cumin seeds. Cook for 2 minutes then add 2 cups water. Add water first then rice. Stir it and close the lid and pressure cook up to 2 whistles on high heat.

Step 6 – Open pressure cooker lid once steam is out. Transfer hot rice in another bowl. Dal and Rice is ready. Serve hot.
