About the Recipe

Upma is very famous breakfast recipe in South India. This is very healthy recipe. I have used little oil to fry onion, if you are making this as a weight loss option then don’t add oil. Use only good fat that is ghee and adjust the quantity of ghee. This is healthy yet delicious breakfast recipe. And upma keeps you full for long time.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 semolina (Sujji)
  • 8-9 whole/split cashews
  • 1/2 tsp gram lentil, 1/2 tsp what udad lentil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 4-5 fresh curry leaves
  • 1 medium size onion, 1 small tomato
  • 1/2 tsp salt or as per your taste
  • 1 & 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp oil, 1 tbsp ghee

Stepwise Directions

Step 1- Dry roast semolina in a pan for 4-5 minutes. We don’t want semolina to turn brown. We want to roast to make it little crisp. Also, chop onion and tomato.

Step 2 – Take a deep pan and add 1 tbsp oil, when oil is hot add gram lentil, white udad lentil and mustard seeds. Let is cook until they turn brown. Then add 4-5 fresh curry leaves and onion. Cook for 2-3 minutes then add tomato. Cook tomato until it’s become soft then add green chili (optional) and 1/2 tsp salt OR as per taste. Now add roasted semolina and mix everything well.

Step 3 – Add 1 & 1/2 cup water then add 1 tbsp ghee, stir everything well then cover with lid and simmer for 5 minutes. Check after 5 minutes, stir again and then cook for another 2 minutes on close lid. After 2 minutes, close the gas garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot.
